Slasher Knitting

I know a lot of people knit at the movies, but I never had until yesterday. See, the guys were finally coming to our apartment to install the new heating system (yay, we finally have heat!) and I just could not be there for that. The guys have come in a few times to look around and plan what they would do and one of them is just so obnoxious I can't help but want to punch him in the mouth every time I see him. He uses the word "tits" to mean "great," think "wow, this apartment is going to be easy, it's going to be tits to work on!" Who says stuff like that?! So I hopped on the 87 and made my way to the Rosedale mall and the theatre there. There really weren't too many things there I wanted to see (well, I do want to see Coraline and Slumdog but Shane does too so I wanted to wait until he could come too since he had the joy of being in the apartment while the guys were there). I settled for Friday the 13th, I'll choose a slasher over a chick flick any day. The movie was meh but I did get to work on my Reclamation Scarf a little:

I only got to work on it during the previews and whatnot though, it got too dark during the actual movie and I didn't want to bother the one other person in the theatre with my clicking. The pattern is by Stephanie Japel and it's written so you can use one ball of any yarn at any gauge to make a cute little scarf. The yarn is a new one, it's called Haze by Queensland Collection:

The yarn is 60% corn viscose and 40% cotton. You get 275 yards (250m) in each hank. From feel, it reminds me of a soft cotton, I would have never guessed it contained corn. The real difference between this and a 100% cotton is the weight, this stuff seems much lighter which is nice. And the colors are gorgeous and subtle and you know I'm happy when there's a nice purple for me! This is one of the new yarns they had at Borealis to tempt me when I was there Tuesday, there's a also a really pretty one in sherbert colors that I might just have to get some time.

Spring Pattern Aniticipation

I have mixed feelings about Spring. Of course I love that Winter is over and it starts to warm up here, but it also means the joy of seasonal allergies. I think I just can't win here in Minnesota! Ah well, at least I can dream about all the cute Spring/Summer knitting. Here's what I'm excited about:

Premiere V-Neck Lace Medalion Tunic by Pam Allen. It's in the Classic Elite booklet Round Pond and I love it. I don't have the booklet yet but I did get a gift certificate to the Yarnery for Valentines Day, hee hee! I love the boobie detailing on this top, I think it might look scary if you had a big chest but I think it might work on me.

And from the same booklet, the Soft Linen Side to Side Skirt by Kat Coyle. I've never knit a skirt before and have no idea if I could pull off the look, but I love it.

I really like lots of stuff in Norah Gaughan 4 but this is one of my faves, it's called Flower Child.

Nolicare from the Berroco booklet Linen Picnic.

Blouson by Cirilia Rose from the same booklet. So cute!

So much cuteness, but what are you looking forward to knitting for the warmer months?

Cool News Story

Hola! I don't have much to report but I did want to share this cool story that was on the news yesterday. The reporter is a woman from the tuesday knitting group at Borealis I go to so it's extra cool! It talks a lot about etsy and how crafty businesses are actually doing really well in this economy, check it out:

Friday Shop Update - a day late!

***edited to add more stuff!***

Since yesterday was insane around here I didn't get around to doing a shop update. But I do have something fresh off the sewing machine, a super cute skull-tastic project bag:

More Stuff:

Coming to you from the inside of a fridge

Whew, today is day three without heat here in the building, doesn't that sound like fun during the winter in Minnesota? They're replacing the whole heating system here and apparently they don't feel the need to rush, or work on weekends. The maintenance guys brought some space heaters for us, but there's really only so much those can do in a drafty apartment. Do I sound whiny enough? Speaking of crappy apartments, check this funny site out, I got the link from Julia over at The Monster Stomp.

I've set up camp in the bedroom since it's the smallest room, although the computer is out in the 40-something degree living room so I'm typing as fast as I can so I can run back under the blankets. I've got my knitting ready in there, see:

Since husband had the day off yesterday we went out to soak up heat and warm water (did I mention the hot water heaters were turned off for two days?) and I decided I needed to stop at Crafty Planet for some retail therapy. Check out this awesome fabric I got:

I got the cute retro print in the middle and two more Japanese import prints, skulls and robots. I'm thinkin' these will make some really cute bags!

Take care and stay warm everyone!

U-Haul, Me-Haul

As much as I like hunting around for new places to live, I absolutely hat packing! I don't know who enjoys it, maybe nobody, but I think it really sucks. I'm trying to get all of the non-essentials like summer clothes and cds that I already have on my ipod into boxes so we'll be a bit more ready to go if we find a new place soon. After calling around 900 buildings, we finally got a call back for a walk through. Oh my god people, it's as if that building was created only to make me appreciate the place we're at now. The whole inside of the building reeked of cigarettes and the apartment itself smelled like someone died in there. The manager said it was because the fridge was left unplugged for weeks filled with food so there was all kinds of mold in there, nice. And then he opened the fridge to show me, who does that! So we just about ran out there as quickly as possible. We've got some more possibles to try to make appointments with though, so hopefully we'll have more luck!

I have actually been able to do some knitting the last couple of days, but I can't share because it's top secret. I've also been able to get some sewing done so I could add a few new things to the shop. I know it's not Friday so I really shouldn't talk much about my etsy, but I have a showcase spot today so I'm having a free shipping special on some items, including more squirrely goodness!

I think instead of having random posts here about my etsy shop updates, I'll just do one every Friday unless I have some kind of big announcement. So here we go!

FO: Red Scarf

Yes, I finally finished my donation scarf! I got the knitting done last night while watching my favorite hgtv shows (House Hunters and the like) and got the ends taken care of today while listening to the newest episode of Stash and Burn. If you haven't tuned in before or you don't remember the ever so exciting details about the scarf, I knit it for a donation the Red Scarf Project, they'll be collecting scarves at the Knit Out this weekend at the Mall of America. I used one skein of Caron Simply Soft in red and one skein of Caron Simply Soft Eco in a really nice blue. I used US size 7 needles and did a simple 2X2 rib stripe pattern. I really enjoyed making it but it took a while because I haven't had loads of uninterrupted knitting time lately. I had hoped to take a better picture of myself wearing it but I look like hell right now, I haven't had a chance to wash my face or brush my hair yet. I should probably do that after I finish this post!

Made of Crazy

Things have just been nuts lately around here! It's not really bad though, it's just a lot all at once. First of all, we're finally looking for a new apartment! I've been here with the boy for a few years now and I never really liked the place but he hates moving so I kind of dealt with it. But it's just getting ickier here by the moment, the owners seem to be giving up on things like maintenance and service and things that were small annoyances are getting out of control. Flooded closet floors anyone? Luckily, water has gotten in there before so I don't have anything on the floor but still, they refuse to do anything to fix the problem. Grrrr. And the heat, oh the heat. Think one thermostat for the entire building that's a lot of people so nobody is ever at a comfortable temperature. But I'm really excited, I love apartment/house hunting, I think it's great fun! And the new place doesn't have to be perfect, I can't imagine we'll be there too long, just long enough for me to finish school and get a bit of work under my belt and we have enough saved up to buy a house.

And then there's the crazy of the etsy shop. It's big fun, but it's a fair amount of work. Oooh, look at the new stitch markers I made which will be for the shop at some point:

Cute, eh? Oh, and I made my first sale! I was really excited, you should have seen the dance :)

I also got another big shipment of yarn today for designing, yay, so much pretty! I can't talk about what it's for yet, but it's a really exciting project and I can't wait to get started.

The cutest thing ever!

So of course I didn't have my camera ready!

This morning while I was at the computer, I heard a big thump by the window and looked out to see the word's most gigantic squirrel. He was looking right into the window and I could actually hear him sniffing around. Then he saw me and covered his face with his little paws, I was totally frozen by cuteness and couldn't move away to grab the camera! Then he got tired of looking at me and climbed up the screen and went along with his day. Yay for cute squirrels, boo for not being ready with a camera!

FO: Slouch for All Seasons

My friends, slouchyness has finally been achieved! I know I've said I have a big head here before, but it really is true. I've tried on slouchy hats in stores and they either fit like tight skull caps or don't even go on my head. Yeah. And the ones I've knit myself haven't been any better. Until now! I've found the perfect pattern with the perfect mods to make a hat sized for my medicine ball head!

The pattern is A Slouch for All Seasons by Melissa LaBarre and it's just great. It's fun to knit and has really clear and concise directions. I used a thicker yarn than called for, some Cotton Ease in plum, and larger needles once I got past the ribbing. I love the result, it's actually slouchy on me! I got the husband to take a picture of the back for me:

I love it so much I'm actually wearing it as I'm typing this :)

Stitchy McMarkers

I've been beading again! And yay, I finally found my wire cutters so I could make some stitch markers. I love how they came out and need to get some more beads so I can make some for myself. These are all going into my etsy shop though:

Have a great weekend everyone!

I aim to please

Just a quick post to answer some questions I got about the fabric I used in some of my bags. The squirrel print is a Japanese fabric I bought at my local store, Treadle, but I found it online by searching for "japanese squirrel fabric." I found it for sale here at Miss Matabi but I've never ordered from them so yeah.

The bird fabric was a little harder to track down. I couldn't remember who makes it and I cut off all the selvedges so I had to do a lot of searching. I finally found it at eQuilter, the collection is called Feathered Friends and it comes in a couple of different colors. I used to order from eQuilter all the time, I totally recommend them, they're fast and they donate a portion of their profits to various charities. Whew, ok!

Whoo, I did some beading last night! I really should have been working on my scarf that I have to have done by the 15th to donate, but, well, you know how that goes. This necklace is from a kit I got at the Bead Monkey a while back, it was a lot of manipulating little split rings so it wasn't too hard but it was a little tedious. It came out nice but I don't know if it's really my style so it'll probably end up being a present for my mom (mothers day always sneaks up on me).

I also did some sewing last night, see the cute squirrels:

And birds:

Etsy!!!

Well folks, I've finally done it, I've finally opened up a little Etsy shop! I've been kind of resisting for a while, but I finally decided to take the plunge and do it. It's been fun so far, getting everything ready, taking pictures... What finally pushed me to do it is that I'll be needing some extra money soon since I'll be going to school (ahhhh!) starting in August. It's scary (in a really good way) but I'll be studying Cosmetology, something I've wanted to do since I was a kid but was discouraged from because it didn't seem "academic" enough. Bleh! But now, finances allowing, I'll be off to college again (someday I'll tell the story of my first failed attempt at schooling). I'm hoping my little shop will help pay for textbooks and whatnot. So far I only have 6 items up but I wanted to get going and stop putting it off so I'll be adding to the shop as I get things done. Want to see some of the stuff I have up?:

Ok, so those are some of the drawstring project bags I have up, yay! And I promise that my blog won't turn into one big Etsy add either, that's no fun.

Oooh, did you notice the new blog header I put up? Super cute right? I had it done by Studio Sub for a great price that included banners for my Etsy shop, they were super fast and did an awesome job, I totally recomend them.

Ok, I'm off to knit and maybe get some cleaning done (that's a big maybe, tee hee).

Leyburn KAL

So we're having another KAL on the Vegan Socks KAL! A while ago, we did the Spring Forward pattern and it was a lot of fun (even if I didn't exactly finish mine in a timely manner...) so I'm excited about another one. This time we're doing the Leyburn Socks by MintyFresh, it's a free pattern available as a Ravelry download. The KAL runs until March 7th if any of you want to join in, you don't have to be vegan but you do have to use vegan yarn. See the group page on Ravelry for details (and yes, there will be prizes!)

The pic at the top shows two colorways of Crystal Palace yarn that I'm contemplating. I'm leaning toward the Panda Soy in Stained Glass:

Pretty eh?
