Soy Shawl

I posted this shawlette on Ravelry, but I'm pretty sure I haven't blogged about it yet:

I made it from my lone ball of Phoenix that I've had for ages and even blogged about on the very first post on this blog. The yarn is really pretty but it's a little annoying to work with because it's a flat ribbon yarn and it tends to get twisty while you're working with it, bleh. The construction is just like the last shawlette I made, increases on the ends and on each side of the center stitch. The last shawl I had on Etsy sold (yay) and this one is also available in my shop.

Me Read Pretty

Whoo, today was exciting, I took my placement exams for the school I'm going to this fall. I had a pretty good idea going in how it would probably play out, I'd do fairly well on the reading and writing bit and suck ass on the math. And I was right! Luckily, my program doesn't require you to score well on math so I'm good. My reading and sentence test scores put me in the 99th percentile and on the math....................7th! Awesome, right :) But really, it's been about nine years since high school math and we always encouraged to use a calculator for everything so taking a math test without a calculator was just evil. So I'm all enrolled now and I get to register for classes in a few days, scary and exciting!!!

Hey, want to see what I've been knitting? I haven't had a whole lot of time lately to knit (or sew for that matter) but here's what I've got going:

It's the start of a Forest Canopy Shawl and it's for me me me! I wanted a pattern that would work with the 2 balls of South West Trading Company's Bamboo I got from someone on Ravelry and this seems like just the thing. I've done the set-up bit and have one repeat knit and I love it so far, the colors are gorgeous and the pattern is easy to follow (and it comes with both written directions and charts, yay for me because I hate charts).

Spicy Tahini Stew

This post is pretty much what I wrote on the food blog I keep with Shane, but this stew was so good that I have to share here too!

Isn’t it pretty? And it tastes just as good as it looks! This was our dinner for tonight, the Spicy Tahini Stew from the Swell zine. I ordered this cute little zine recently and just had to make the stew, it has all of my favorite ingredients: chickpeas, tahini, tons of veggies… and the recipe did not disappoint, it was super easy to make and was really delicious. The only mod I made was that I added garlic, but then I add garlic to pretty much everything savory.

If you haven’t bought yourself a copy of Swell yet, you’re really missing out, it’s got a bunch of really tasty looking recipes and it’s only $3!

FO: Spring Shawl

Look at me with two FO posts in a row!

This shawl started out as kind of an experiment, I'd never knit a triangular shawl (or any shawl for that matter) and just wanted to play a bit. So I looked up how to make a basic triangle and pretty much did that, I increased one stitch on each end and on both sides of the center stitch. The yarn is Toccata Print, it's a 100% cotton that is sadly discontinued, I really love it though!

As much as I adore this shawl, it's going in my Etsy shop, August and the start of school is getting closer and closer (and the financial aid situation is looking pretty dismal) so I'm hoping she will find a nice home. What's really great about this basic shawl is the totally different ways you can wear it and that it looks just as cute with a summer tank and with a work appropriate blouse! Did I just use the word blouse? Hmmm.

The Spring Shawl would make a really nice Mothers Day gift too!

FO: Tree Jacket

Um, finally :)

Yes, it's finally done, the Tree Jacket that has somehow taken seven months to knit! And of course now it's totally too hot to wear it, boo hoo! But this is Minnesota so the weather could always go crazy and I'll get a chance to give this baby a spin around town. And if not, Fall is always around the corner. I love this sweater though, it's a great color, much prettier in person, and it was fun to knit.

Pattern: Tree Jacket by Zephyr Style

Yarn: 4 skeins of Berroco Comfort in Agean Sea
Needles: US 8 and US 6

Size: Small (32"-35")

Mods: I changed the neck to be more of a turtleneck, I tried it as written but it was too floppy and I didn't like it. I also did the sleeves in stockinette instead of garter and added some ribbing at the bottom.

Sanctuary Scarf

The Sanctuary Scarf is very special, I made it as a fundraising item for Farm Sanctuary. Josh Hooten of Herbivore is going on a 600 mile bike right from Portand Oregan to California next month and hopes to raise $10,000 for this great organization. Farm Sanctuary is a national, non-profit animal protection organization. Each year they rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for hundreds of animals rescued from factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses. The $30 purchase price of this scarf will be donated toward Josh's goal so please check it out if you can. Or you can donate here if you can, remember, any amount helps toward his awesome goal :)

And now a bit more about the actual scarf! I used my pattern, the Panda Cotton Drop Stitch Scarf, US size 7 needles, and one ball of Rowan Damask (57% Viscose, 22% Linen, 21% Acrylic). I really love how it came out, the yarn works great in this pattern. It's another very light yarn so this scarf will be great as a summer accessory.

Neopolitan

Look what came today, it's so gorgeous!!!:

If you're thinking, hmmm, that looks like spinning fiber, I didn't know Kala knew how to spin, well I don't. Not yet anyway! Because I clearly need another craft in my life, I'm going to try my hand at drop spindling. A lovely chica from my knitting group is going to have a quick and dirty drop spindle demo later this month and I'm very excited. I bought a spindle last summer from a cute shop up in Perham and have let it sit in my closet with three bags of fiber (bamboo, ingeo, and soysilk - all undyed) for almost a year. So of course I had to search around Etsy for more fiber! I figure even if I hate the drop spindle I can still use the fiber for those thrummed mitts like Grumperina made. The fiber is 100% bamboo and it's from Whimzy Pinzy, she also has vegan sock yarn, but not in any Kala colors right not. So check her shop out, she sent my order out really quickly and I love the stuff so I totally recommend her.

Free Pattern: Seascape Scarf

Hey, I've got another free pattern out with Crystal Palace! The idea behind this scarf was an easy to knit scarf that would use only one skein of Panda Cotton and be light enough to wear in warm weather. I used one ball of Panda Cotton in the Seascape colorway and US size 2 needles. The pattern is free and available at Crystal Palace. Note: all pics were taken by Crystal Palace.

Must Finish Sweater!

So do you remember the Tree Jacket I've been working on since the beginning of time? Yeah, I hardly remember either. Holy crap, I just looked at the project page on Ravelry and saw that I started it 7 months ago, ouch! Here's where I am, I'm so close to being done I can taste it:

I just need to finish up the second sleeve and I'm done! The sleeve is really getting me though, it's one of those black hole knitting situations, I knit and knit, but the thing never seems to get any longer. Well, at least I have my Ms. Pacman stitch marker to look at while I'm slogging away:

So tell me, what project have you had on the needles since half of forever?

FO: Reclamation Scarfette

I've actually been done with this since March 23rd, but I was waiting until it was a bit sunnier to take pictures. This is my Reclamation scarf, the pattern is by the awesomeness that is Stephanie Japel. The pattern is great, very easy to follow and I love that it works in any yarn and any gauge. The yarn is something I'm in love with and need more of, it's Queensland Collection's Haze and it's made from 60% corn, 40% cotton. The corn really lightens up the yarn, the same scarf in 100% cotton would have been much heavier. It was a dream to knit with, no hand problems or anything, and the colors are so gorgeous! If you're local, they sell it at Borealis.
