FO: Forest Canopy Shawl

Whoa, I finished something!

This has been in progress for quite a while but it's finally done, blocked, and photographed! The pattern is the Forest Canopy Shawl and it's awesome, very well written, great for beginners, and includes both charts and written directions (so nice for me since I hate charts with a passion). I used one skein of South West Trading Company's Bamboo in the Purplexed colorway that I bought from someone destashing on Ravelry - so this shawl ended up costing me $4, sweet! The yarn is really nice, it's the second generation of this line of yarn, the old stuff was much more scratchy, but the newer stuff is so soft and drapey.

I really love purple and think I'll actually wear this little shawl in the fall :)

Lonely Art Vintage Goods

I love a good vintage find, don't you? While it's always fun to search through garage sales and thrift stores for unique items, sometimes you just want someone to do the work for you! Etsy is a great place to find cool vintage stuff, I recently bought this crazy awesome mug from Lonely Art Vintage Goods and thought it would be fun to share a little interview with the shop owner :)

Here's the mug, it's so cool, it has a little compartment in back for your tea bag after your done steeping!:

Ok, here's my interview with Caitlin!

1. How long have you been selling on Etsy and what inspired you to start?

I've only been selling on Etsy since July of this year, but I have been buying since December of 2008. I didn't get a job this summer, and I needed something to occupy my time. I realized I love vintage and I have a ton of it that I'm not using. I thought I would sell it on Etsy because it seems like a lot of good vintage sellers come here.

2. What are some of your favorite things about Etsy?

I really like the community here. Everyone is really supportive and if you get down about low sales, or anything in life, you can just go to a chat room or the forums and you will be cheered up in no time. It also seems like the community is great at getting together to stop controversy, i.e. things that are not handmade, vintage, etc. that are being sold have been kicked off because of the joint efforts of sellers and administrators here.

3. Where do you find all of the cute vintage goods in your shop?

I got a lot of the items from my aunt who is a true vintage collector. She is a single lady who has a lot of time to search for the highest quality of vintage goods. Those items found by her in my shop have mostly been sold, but she is great at helping me out and getting me information I need to back up my items. Once in awhile I will find really great stuff at garage sales or thrift stores as well. The key is to keep your eye open and always check out anything that seems interesting or a potential outlet. I am excited to start going to estate sales, because I have never been (surprisingly)!

4. What's the most amazing vintage find you've ever found - either for yourself or for your shop?

That's funny you should ask, because today I found some "The American Girl" heels from a new Thrift Store in downtown Fort Collins. They have to be circa 1950, or even earlier. I actually mentioned to the lady that I was so surprised I found them. They were actually priced wrong, so I got a great deal on them!

5. Do you have any tips for incorporating vintage items into an everyday wardrobe?

So many people think that they are getting good deals on "unique" items at Urban Outfitters or trendy places like that (I have to admit, I love those places too). If you simply take the time to go to a thrift store you can find those exact items from those places for lower prices! The idea here is that if you just look for vintage items, you can find what you love with a story and a lower pricetag, instead of seeing your same shoes on 10 people walking past you on the street. It always feels better to know you are the only one with a certain item. If you are not into "looking" vintage, that is, wearing all vintage clothing, I always love vintage necklaces or bracelets because they can add that extra flair to a normally modern looking outfit.

6. Where else can we find you online (Facebook fan page, Twitter, Blog)?

You can find me everywhere!

I'm not crazy, really!

Sometimes I wonder if my neighbors think I'm crazy when I'm out taking pictures of things like crocheted candy corn ;) Ah well! I wasn't totally happy with the original pics I took of my single Candy Corn Babies, so I took some new ones today:

In other news, I finally finished my shawl! I looove how it turned out, I need my husband to help me take pics so I can share :)

Sloooooow knitter...

Man, I just realized that I've been working on my Forest Canopy Shawl for 5 months! It's taking forever because my little brain can't handle lace repeats when the husband is home so I don't work on it very often. But still, 5 months? But I'm very close to being done, I finished the repeats for the body last night and now I'm working on the edging, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

In running news, I ran Day 1 of Week 7 yesterday, woo hoo! This whole Couch to 5K thing is really working for me, and having a goal of the Monster Dash at the end is super motivating :)

FO: Candy Corn Babies!

If you've been following along with my crafty adventures for a while, you may remember the little amigurumi candy corn I made last year. Well, I've made a whole lot more! Because Lion Brand is awesome and lets you sell items made from their patterns, I thought it would be fun to have some Candy Corn Babies in my Etsy shop :) I've already sold a set, which is awesome, and I just finished two more sets while watching the season finale of True Blood. Here's a link to the pattern for those who'd like to make some for themselves, and here's a link to the listing in my shop for those who haven't mastered the hook yet :)

I followed the pattern as written but added safety eyes and a little mouth for extra cuteness. The yarn is three colors of Vanna's Choice - I really love that yarn, it's perfect for amigurumi!

FO: Stained Glass Socks

Whoa, I actually finished something! I finished another pair of my standard 56 stitch plain vanilla socks that I love - great mindless knitting and comfy to wear. The yarn is two skeins of Crystal Palace's Panda Soy in the Stained Glass colorway, this is my first FO using this yarn and I really like it. I'll update you on how it washes and wears over time, hopefully they'll just keep getting softer like my Panda Cotton socks :)

MN State Fair 2009!

Shane and I went to the fair last Monday and it was a lot of fun! The Minnesota State Fair is huge and always crazy full of people (and food on a stick). I've gone every year that I've been with Shane and I love it, and yes, there is vegan food to be had at the fair - this year we had french fries, stuffed grape leaves on a stick, falafel sandwiches, apple cider freezes, and tons of soda. I have a ton of pictures to share, there's always lots of good knitwear to be seen in the Creative Activities Building, and it's fun to see stuff that people I know from knit night have done. So here's a ton of pics:

Aren't these mittens fabulous and impressive?

Labor Day Sale!

Labor Day has never been a big holiday with me, and especially not now since el husband doesn't get holidays off from work. But that doesn't mean I can't have a sale in my Etsy shop! I really wasn't planning on it, but a little extra money to help pay for all the recent car drama would be awesome :) So I have lots of stuff at 50% off through Monday including project bags, zippered pouches, drop spindle bags, and totes! Here are just a few of the things that are on sale:

-C25K update: I finished Day 2 of Week 5 yesterday!

Still here...

Hey! It's been a while since I've updated here, things have been crazy with the apartment needing all sorts of maintenance and the car falling apart again and again. I was all stressed and pathetic at knit night Tuesday but I felt a whole lot better after being there for a while, those ladies are the best! On the crafting front, I had to rip out the back of the Heathered Hoodie I was working on because I once again screwed up the cables (I'm thinking this thing has given me enough trouble and I should just give up). But that yarn will probably be put aside so I can work on my Liesl, I'm using some Knit Picks yarn and I'll talk about that once I get started, or at least swatch :) Ok, I'll be back soon with a real post with pictures and everything, promise!
