Interweave Knits: Summer 2010

Has everyone seen the preview for the Summer issue of Interweave? At first glance I'm not really loving it, nothing is really grabbing me except the Ambrosia Cardigan by Katya Frankel:

Pretty, right? And it's another design that works well for the smaller chested ladies (sorry Jen, you and your DDDs are out!). Not that it wouldn't work for the uber busty, but it might start to look a little pirate wenchy if there was too much cleavage popping out ;)

So what's grabbing you from this issue?

Trade Friendly

Trading is awesome, I have to say! Making lots of money means absolutely nothing to me (which might explain why I've never had a job...) and if I could just trade and barter for everything I needed that would be perfect. Of course, life doesn't work that way, for the most part, but trading on Etsy is fairly common and super fun! My latest trade was with the awesome woman who owns Knit Girl In Idaho, a really fun Etsy shop that sells some very unique stitch markers. I traded some of my goodies (gnomes!) for a set of vintage cowgirl markers:

And a set of pinup markers:

And she even included a cool storage tin:

Cool, right? I love sassy vintage pinup girls and have been coveting these stitch markers for a long time, thanks so much to Knit Girl In Idaho for trading with me! She has lots of neat markers in her shop and you can even have personalized ones made with an image or saying of your choice! So what do you guys think about trading/bartering?

A bit of a cut

I feel like it's been a while since I've posted anything I've been up to lately, I actually have been knitting but nothing terribly exciting until recently. I'm working on a really nice simple sock design suitable for men, I'll share some pics when I'm a bit further along. But what I can share right now is my haircut!

I think I look slightly creepy in this pic, but it's the best one I've got! I hadn't had a haircut or even a trim in over a year and a half, so on Tuesday I decided to walk down to my local salon, Pusch for a cut. I'm happy with how it came out, nothing drastic or anything but way better than the scraggly witch thing I had going on before :)

But I Want It Now!

Note: The title of this post MUST be read in an annoying Veruca Salt like voice :) But anyway, this post is all about things that are coming out soon that I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on!

This one has been on my Amazon wish list for quite a while, it's New England Knits: Timeless Knitwear With a Modern Twist by Melissa LaBarre and Cecily Glowik MacDonald. I love Melissa's designs and know that this is going to be a great book, I was hoping it would have been out for my b-day in March but ah well :)

Next is Knitting Mochimochi by Anna Hrachovec of Mochimochi land fame and awesomeness, can't wait!

In the world of food, I'm very much looking forward to Quick and Easy Vegan Celebrations by Alicia C. Simpson. I have her first book, Vegan Comfort Food and everything I've made from it has been beyond awesome!

And finally, I'm very much looking forward to the next installment in the Sookie Stackhouse series, Dead in the Family. These books are really good brain candy :)

So what new stuff are you guys looking forward too?

A Handmade Mothers Day

I suppose it's not true for every mother, but for my mom, handmade is always the best way to go when it comes to gifts. It helps that she's an artist and poet herself, she definitely appreciates the time, effort, and love that goes into handmade goodies. This years gifts will be a mix of things I made and things that others have made (yay for supporting other Etsy artists!) First, here's what I made for her:

So what are you making/buying for mom this year?

Simple Pleasures

When I was a little girl, there were few finer treats than a big old bean and cheese burrito from Los Burritos, a favorite LA Mexican restauant of my youth. Until very recently, I hadn't been able to recreate the awesomeness of a simple bean and cheese burrito, no vegan cheese was quite up to the task. And then came Daiya. It's by farrrrrrr, the best cheese ever, it's delicious, it melts, and it stretches! If you have a Z Pizza near you, go now and have the Berkeley Vegan, they use Daiya and it's so so so good! But back to my burrito. The other part that made this little tube of joy so yummy was the beans, homemade refried beans made in the slow cooker using this recipe. Yummy and super cheap to make, gotta love it! So what's your simple food pleasure?

Spring in the Woods

I was going to call this post "Woodland Wonders" but apparently I've already used that title, I wonder what that post was about? Anyway, just wanted to pop in really quick to share the newest goodies from my studio (and as Kathy has seen, by "studio" I mean the table in the corner of the bedroom).

On and Off the Needle(s)

First, what's off the needle, the embroidery needle! This year for Shane's Easter gift I thought it might be fun to embroider onto an apron for him:

He loves to cook and makes most dinners when he's home or working an early shift (I'm the baker, I'm all about the sweets!) so he needs a cute apron :) And when I saw this awesome design on Urban Threads, I knew I had found perfection. I bought a plain white apron at Target (about $6) and with a bit of time I had a great present that he really likes, yay!

Now for what's on the needles. As any of you who have been reading my blog for a while know, I love to knit socks. But every sock I've ever made has been top down, I've never even attempted toe-up (even though I own two books all about toe-up socks...) but today I decided to change that and cast on for these:

Not only am I trying a new technique, I'm also trying a new sock yarn, Serenity Garden in the Hibiscus colorway. Since I love my dpns, I looked for a pattern that called for them specifically and found Wendy Knits' pattern for basic toe up socks with a gusset heel. I'll definitely try socks on circs at some point, but I don't have the right size needles and don't really feel like buying any right now so yeah. Wish me luck!

Spring Sewing

Sewing projects, and not for Etsy, for ME! My adorable friend Kathy and I are doing a sew-along for the trapeze dress from Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. It's a super cute and (hopefully) simple dress that will be great for Spring and Summer. After a fun trip to the local fabric store, Treadle, I decided on this print:

And without any planning at all, Kathy chose the same print in a different color! Although I still think she should have gone with this one:

Who wouldn't want a dress made out of that, right? ;)

So what Spring sewing/knitting/crochet projects do you guys have in the works?
