Minnesota State Fair - Part One!

Yesterday Shane and I went to the Minnesota state fair, one of my favorite events of the season! The fair is always full of eats (yes, even for vegans!), people, and things to see - and this year I'm going to break down my trip into a few blog posts. Today is all about a part of the fair that I like to look at but not really participate in, the midway. I've been playing around with Picnik a bit and I'm really loving that program, so of course I had to vintage-out my fair ride pics, I think it gives them that cool vintage postcard look :)

So what rides do you guys like at the fair?  P.S.  - stay tuned for my next fair post which will be all about the knitting, crafting, and canning!

Swarovski Ring Giveaway from Trinkets N Whatnots!

Today's Etsy shop feature and giveaway comes to us from Janet and her beautiful shop, Trinkets N Whatnots. Janet's shop is full of gorgeous handmade jewelry and she's generously offering a prize of one lucky winner's choice of any Swarovski ring from her shop! Let's get to know Janet and her shop:

1. How long has your Etsy shop been open and what inspired you to start selling on Etsy?

I opened my etsy shop August 2007. I had been making jewelry since getting out of the Navy in 2005. I sold my jewelry to friends and family and at craft shows with great success. So I decided to try to find other avenues to sell, and I google how to sell jewelry online. The first result was a site called Etsy. I had never heard of it, but I liked what I read and the feel of the site and it was minimal risk to invest in Etsy. So that is how I got started on Etsy.

2. How do you fit time to create into your day?

Finding time to create I think is probably one of the bigger challenges any artist has. I am naturally a night person, and find that I am most creative at night when there are no distractions. So I work for a minimum of 2 hours a night. That is my rule. Of course, once I get started it is hard to stop since I really enjoy creating. It really helps to write down goals, to help motivate and keep me on track.

3. Do you have any fun hobbies outside of your shop?

I have played the piano since I was 5 years old and I collect dragonflies :)

Ok, ready to win a beautiful Swarovski Ring from Janet's shop? There are eight possible entries, only the first one is mandatory, and please leave a separate comment for each entry.  Also, please make sure to leave a way for me to contact you if you win :) Entries:

1. Visit Trinkets N Whatnots on Etsy and then leave a comment here letting me know your favorite item.

2. Add Trinkets N Whatnots to your Etsy favorites.

3. Follow Janet's blog.

4. Follow Janet on Twitter.

5. "Like" Janet's shop on Facebook.

6. Follow this blog.

7. "Like" Vegancraftstic on Facebook.

8. Blog, tweet, or post on Facebook about this giveaway.

Entries are open to both US and international folks and giveaway ends on Monday, August 30th. Good luck!

Pleasing the Mojo Gods

In an attempt to win back the favor of the knitting mojo gods, I cast on for some simple vanilla socks last night before True Blood:

This summer has just been waaaay too hot and humid and has sucked away most of my knitting mojo.  But I'm hoping that some nice soothing stockinette will get me back on track!  I'm really loving this colorway of Panda Cotton, it's called Bastille and looks much nicer knit up than it does in the skein.

Possibility and Inspiration

There's something about playing around or just looking at art/craft supplies that's super inspiring to me. Maybe it's the endless possibilities that raw materials represent (or maybe it's just the purty shiny pretties) but when I'm feeling less than inspired it usually helps to dig through my stuff a bit. Today, it was beads:

Playing around with the beads got me thinking about stitch markers and then I felt like sewing, so after a long walk around the neighborhood I sewed this little cutie:

It's the Chubby Bird project bag and I really need to make one for myself, the fabric is so adorable! So what gets you guys inspired when you're in a bit of a slump?

Art on the Cheap

Decorating the new apartment has been a lot of fun so far, but as always, we have to keep budget in mind. Art is very important to me, and in this place I'm determined to be surrounded by inspiring pieces that I love. One of my favorite illustrators is a local artist named Adam Turman - if you live in the twin cities you've probably seen his work - and I've coveted his prints for quite some time. Since he's going to be at the MN State Fair this year, I plan on getting one of his larger prints for the living room, but for now I found a cheap way to get me some Adam Turman goodness in my kitchen (that just sounds wrong...) - not the best picture but I took it at 7pm in a kitchen so there you go:

I got a 99 cent postcard from the Electric Fetus (local record store) and a cheap Ribba frame from Ikea and boom - cheap art for the kitchen! The print I got celebrates a food that I've never even had - lefse, but I think my husband should make some for me since he's a Minnesota boy :)

3 AM Art Giveaway!

Today's Etsy shop feature and giveaway comes to us from Heather from 3 AM Art Productions! Heather is offering one lucky winner their choice of one 8 X 10 print and one set of stickers. Heather's shop is full of gorgeous photography and other goodies, let's get to know Heather and her awesome shop:

1. How long has your Etsy shop been open and what inspired you to start selling on Etsy?

I've been on Etsy for about three years. My Mother gave me the link & told me all about it. She has long been an artist, and sells too. Her shop is Kaliharo. It's the first two initials, of all four of her grandchildren formed into a word, in the order of their birth's too.

2. How do you fit time to create into your day?

My shop is called 3 AM art for a reason actually. It's because I end up creating in the middle of the night or in little bits and pieces here and there. I do mainly photography at this time, however, I do create some other things. Pins, magnets, sewn items etc in my shop from time to time. Or when I have the time. I take my camera everywhere we go. The kids have been raised around it, and expect that if we see some pretty flowers, they will have to wait a few moments till I've captured them adequately. I think this is good for them. The give and take, not to expect that every outing is just about them.

3. What advice would you give someone whose thinking about selling on Etsy?

Do it, I think it's fun. I've met so many wonderful people & helped raise money for so many good causes that I couldn't have done without Etsy. It's wonderful place, I'm happy to have found it!

4. What's your favorite summertime treat?

Oooh summer is filled with sooo many good things to eat. So hard to choose just one. I love all the locally found fruits and veggies and helping my local economy in the summertime. One fav on the top of the list is fruit sorbet! So fun and easy to make. I also just learned how to make vegan sushi, it's the bomb!

Ok, ready to win your choice of one 8 X 10 print and some stickers? There are eight possible entries, only the first entry is mandatory, and please leave a separate comment for each entry. Also, make sure you leave a way for me to contact if you win! Entries:

1. Visit 3 AM Art and then leave a comment here letting me know your favorite item.

2. Add Heather's shop to your Etsy favorites (heart her shop).

3. Follow Heather on Twitter.

4. "Like" her shop on Facebook.

5. Follow Heather's blog.

6. Follow this blog.

7. "Like" Vegancraftastic on Facebook.

Embroidery Giveaway!

It's Etsy feature and giveaway time again at Casa de Vegancraftastic!  This week we'll get to know Penny and her cute shop, Gracey May. Gracey May is full of cute and unique hand embroidered home goods and accessories. Read on to the end of this post to find out how you can win a cool anchor embroidery piece from Gracey May! Let's get to know Penny and her shop:

1. How long has your Etsy shop been open?

My shop has been open since 2008, but it's only been about a year since I actually starting actively selling things and seriously working on my shop. I think I was intimated to get started because I spent so much time looking at how great everyone else's shops were and didn't think I could compete! I finally just stopped looking and concentrated on what I love to create and my shop came together!

2. How do you fit time to create into your day?

I have a 2 yr. old and 5 yr old, so it's VERY hard to find time during my day to be creative! I write down ideas as soon as I have them during the day and work on them at night after the girls go to bed.

3. Do you have any fun hobbies outside of your shop?

I would have to say my hobbies are hanging out with my girls and my husband - that's all I want to do these days! When I have time I love reading & researching about my family history. I'm working on writing a book (trying that is!) based on a journal my great, great, grandmother kept during the civil war.

Ok, ready to win the anchor embroider pictured at the top of the post? There are six possible entries, only the first one is mandatory and please leave a separate comment for each entry. Also make sure you leave a way for me to contact you if you win :) Ok, here are the entries:

1. Hop on over Gracey May and then comment here letting me know your favorite item.

2. Follow Gracey May on Twitter.

3. Add Gracey May to your Etsy favorites.

3. Follow this blog.

4. "Like" Vegancraftastic on Facebook.

5. Follow Vegancraftastic on Twitter.

6. Blog, tweet, or post on Facebook about this contest.

Giveaway is open to both US and international folks and ends on Monday, August 16th. Good luck!

It's kinda hot

No seriously, this summer is kicking my butt - it's been so hot and humid this year, yuck!  When I'm at home I pretty much hide in the bedroom with the AC and laptop as much as I can.  The heat seems to be killing my knitting mojo too, I just can't seem to get excited about anything....ok, enough whining for now!  Look at the bright and fun thank you cards I made for my Vegancraftastic shop on Etsy:

So how do you guys stay motivated to knit when it's over 90 out?

Sewing and Reading

I'm pretty in love with the new notebooks in my Etsy shop, Vegancraftastic, they have to do with two of my favorite things, sewing and reading!  First, reading - this is the Young Reader's Book Journal, perfect for keeping track of your kid's reading! I didn't keep a diary when I was little, but I did keep a book journal :)

Young Reader Book Journal - Lined Notebook

This would also be great for keeping track of books you read to or with your kids.

And now for sewing:

This sewing journal is great for keeping track of pattern notes, fabric requirements, sketches, and more! Plus, it fits in your purse so you can take it along to the fabric store when you're shopping for your next project :)

Vegan Chocolate Strawberry Muffin Cake

So delicious:

Last night I did a bit of baking! This cake was the first thing I baked from scratch in the new place :) Since we have a ton of strawberries in the fridge, I decided to go with the Strawberry Love Muffins from the book My Sweet Vegan by Hannah Kaminksy (of the blog Bittersweet). Since the muffin tins aren't unpacked yet, I baked them in a square pan - one I usually use for cornbread - instead. They came out really yummy, the only changes I made to the recipe were that I subbed a bit of whole wheat pastry flour for the ap flour and added chocolate chips. Because apparently I have to add chocolate to everything :) My Sweet Vegan is an awesome book, I bought it right away when it came out because I love Hannah's blog, so many great recipes! The Mini Icebox Cheesecake recipe alone is worth the price of the book, it's AMAZING. So what are some of your go-to baking books?

The Great Unpackening -ening

You wouldn't think it would be such an ordeal packing up and then unpacking a one bedroom apartment, right?  Well, maybe if I didn't have so many art and craft supplies and if both of us didn't have so much music it would be a lot easier :)  But I'm really not complaining, those who know me well know how bad the situation in my last apartment was, so any bit of hard work now is totally worth it.  The place is coming together slowly, my work table is mostly set up and the bedroom is getting close to being a real room and not just a place where we dig through suitcases to find clean clothes.  Not that we would do something like that around here, ahem!

When we moved we got rid of a TON of stuff - I think we made seven big trips to Goodwill and still have at least one to make - it's scary how much stuff can accumulate over the years, stuff that you don't really use or love anymore.  But the awesome thing about getting rid of unwanted stuff is re-discovering the things that you really love, like my vinyl collection.  The husband and I spent one of our first nights here just hanging out on the floor listening to records, it was great :)  Also, in the last place we didn't have much art on the walls and I really want to change that here, I have a bunch of prints that I've bought on Etsy that just need frames, I'm thinking a trip to Ikea is in order, they have some nice cheapies there.  But really I'm still excited about all of the little things that this apartment has over the old one - doors that actually close and work, ceilings high enough that I can't touch them, lovely wood floors, tile in the bathroom, a dining area, natural light (no more basement dwelling!), a parking space....I know these are little things but it's just such a huge step up from our last place that I still walk around the apartment with a big stupid smile on my face :)  And don't worry, as soon as we're all set up, I'll share some pics!

Johnson Family Zoo Giveaway!

This week's feature and giveaway comes to us from Lisa at Johnson Family Zoo.  Lisa's shop is full of all sorts of cute handmade goodies including some really adorable and functional reusable produce bags - plus she's a Vegan Etsy teamie, yay! Let's get to know Lisa and her shop, plus read on to find out how you can enter to win either your choice of any set of produce bags or item under $14 from her shop!

1. When did you open your Etsy shop and what inspired you to start selling on Etsy?

I've had my shop open about 2 months. I'm an Etsy newbie! I'd love to have some great story on what inspired me to be creative & share my items, but really it was the economy that inspired me! I recently took a 10 percent paycut! This was the kick in the pants I needed to start my etsy shop! I figured I could go out there & look for a second job, or do something I love and try to make a little extra money in the process!

2. How do you fit time to create in your day?

Since I'm a teacher, I just had a 6 week break from work! This gave me lots of time for getting up & running on etsy, crafting, keeping up with team blogs, visiting the post office, etc. My first week back to work KILLED me! I had no time for crafting. I am hoping the next few weeks will allow me to find some balance. I hope to carve out even an hour a day for crafting!

3. What are some of your favorite Etsy shops?

I am fascinated with the other vegan shops- especially ones offering bath & body products! When I first went vegan, finding these were hard in my town and even online, if you don't know where to look. It's great to see them all in one place and made by people who really care & put their heart into it! I am looking forward to trying some great products once my make-up case runs low!

Lisa is also generously offering Free Shipping on US orders $14 or over or international orders $25 or over - just mention Vegancraftastic when you order from her on Etsy.

Ok, ready to win? There are six possible entries to win your choice of any set of reusable produce bags from Johnson Family Zoo, only the first entry is mandatory, and please leave a separate comment for each entry. Also, please leave a way of contacting you if you win (etsy shop name, ravelry name, twitter name, whatever you're comfortable with):

1. Visit Johnson Family Zoo on Etsy then come back here and let me know your favorite item.

2. Add Lisa's shop to your Etsy favorites (heart her).

3. Follow this blog.

4. Follow Vegancraftastic on Twitter.

5. "Like" Vegancraftastic on Facebook.

6.  Blog, tweet, or post on Facebook about this giveaway.

Giveaway is open until Monday August 9th and is open to both US and international folks. Good luck!

End Radio Silence

Hey, I'm back!  Things have been crazy around here, but are finally starting to settle down - we moved!  No more yucky basement apartment, yay!  To my horror though it took a while for the internet to get hooked up (do you know how hard it is to run an online business without internet?  Yeah, not fun).  Anyway, I'm glad to be back online because I really do love this blog, it's a great outlet and I have a lot of fun writing posts and getting feedback from you guys.  And I hope you like it too :)  Ok, gotta go for now, I have an overdue feature/giveaway to set up with the awesomely patient and understanding Johnson Family Zoo.
