On the Needles: Flourish

I was trying really hard to be a monogamous knitter - and it was working for most of the month, I'm sure that's how I finished my Boneyard shawl so quickly - but recently I just HAD to start something new.  I'm getting close to the finish line on my Ariosa Cardi (I'm on sleeve island) so I decided to cast on for a new shawl, here's how it's going:

The pattern is called Flourish and I'm loving knitting it so far, the charts are easy to read and it's always fun watching lace patterns emerge.  The pattern is available on both Ravelry and Etsy.  The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and I'm using two skeins of Berroco Weekend that I recently bought using a gift card from Webs.  I love the color of the yarn (Grape), but working with it isn't 100% awesome - it has very little if any stretch and sort of reminds me of a thinner, softer version of Fantasy Naturale.  Oh, and for those who aren't familiar with lace knitting, the white thread in my shawl is a lifeline, basically it's a spot in my knitting that I can rip back to if I make a horrible unfixable mistake :)

So what are you guys knitting/crafting?

Hugs and Kisses

Today I decided that a cute love themed Etsy treasury was in order. So I hopped on Etsy, searched for "hugs and kisses" and here's what I came up with, enjoy!

Shop Shopping!

Yesterday and today, I did a bit of supply shopping for my Etsy shop:

I don't buy any of my supplies wholesale so I spend a lot of time in local shops trying to find the perfect fabrics and beads.  And really, that's the fun part!  It also makes me happy to support some of the great local fabric and bead shops in the Twin Cities.  This latest haul is from Crafty Planet, Treadle, and the Bead Monkey.  I think I might be most excited about the cupcake fabric, although the owls are pretty cute too!

At least there were pancakes

Oy, yesterday was quite the day!  It actually started out great, the husband had the day off so we spent it together and had a lovely dinner at Everest on Grand.  And then the wheel on our car fell off.  Yup.  Technically, something that keeps the wheel attached to the car snapped, and let me tell you - that is one horrible sound to hear!  The lucky bit was that we were in a parking lot backing out of a space and not on a freeway or anything.  Anyway, after a night of drama, waiting around for a tow truck, and being stranded at a closed service station, we were saved by my good friend Kathy :)

Today however, is much better because it started out with pancakes (I used this recipe from Bittersweet):

We were out of cereal, english muffins, and bagels, but instead of throwing myself on the ground and having a hissy fit, I decided to put on an apron and make pancakes.  And I'm so glad that I did, you can't really be upset about silly stuff like cars when you're enjoying a nice breakfast with your sweetie :)

Knitting and Watching

Last night, after a day of household chores, cleaning, laundry, Etsy shop work, exercise, and cooking, I finally got a chance to work on my sweater again.  Seriously, how do people with kids have time to knit?  Anyway, while I was knitting, I watched two great documentaries on Netflix on Demand that I wanted to share.  First, I watched Our City Dreams:

Our City Dreams is a great doc that profiles five diverse artists who live and work in New York City.  This quote from New York Magazine says it best:  "Not only a first-rate portrait of great artists but also an impressive look at the way they interact with the city that feeds their work."  So watch it, it's awesome!

After that I watched something totally different, Joan Rivers:  A Piece of Work:

I can't say that I'm a huge Joan Rivers fan, but this documentary was really fascinating. I'm not old enough to know Joan for much more than her red carpet stuff, so it was interesting to see what a groundbreaker she was.

Have you guys watched anything awesome lately?

Stitch Markers: Pretty for your Knitting!

I've been on a bit of a stitch marker kick in my Etsy shop lately, they're just so fun to make!  Playing with beads and figuring out what would be fun and pretty for knitters is one of my favorite things to do.  I have a ton of stitch markers that I use in my own knitting (for marking the start of rounds, marking decreases or increases...) but I wish I could keep some of the new sets I have in my shop :)  Here are some that are available now:

Purple Flower Stitch Markers:

Blue Skies Stitch Markers:

Spring Blush Stitch Markers:

Frugal Frannie: Amazon Gift Card!

Sometimes I have to laugh at what a Frugal Frannie I can be sometimes :)  Saving money in easy ways is one of my favorite things.  My friends can tell you this is true, if anyone compliments something I'm wearing I usually answer with "thanks, I got in on clearance for...."

Anyway, today's Frugal Frannie moment came to me from Facebook.  My friend Amy posted about a great deal on Living Social that was too good to pass up.  Living Social, if you haven't heard of it, is like Groupon, they offer discounts from all sorts of businesses, restaurants, etc.  Today on Living Social, you can buy a $20 Amazon gift card for only $10!  While I do love to support local businesses, sometimes Amazon just has things you can't find anywhere else.  So if you'd like to take advantage of this deal, click here, just so you know - if three people buy this deal using my personalized link, I get the deal for free :)

Also, just for signing up for Living Social using my personalized referral link, you get $5 free to use on their site!  Be sure to check it out if you're a Frugal Frannie too!

Knitting With the Ladies!

Yesterday was a really great day, my buddy Jen hosted (or as she kept saying, "sponsored") an afternoon of crafting, food, and fun.  The day started with my poor husband having to wake me up early after a night of not sleeping well.  Apparently I swatted at him and kept saying "I get snooze, I get snooze" ha ha!  Anyway, after a bit of a drive we finally arrived at Jen's house.

I worked on my my cardigan (this pic is from Jen's blog but I liked it so I yoinked it!):

P.S. Jen is doing her best to blog this year so check out JFibers and encourage her!  Here's the hostess showing off her Clapotis:

And unknitting a too long sleeve:

Here's my friend Kathy's beautiful shawl that she's knitting for her mom:

And Kelaine's gorgeous colorwork baby vest:

There are a lot of more pictures on Jen's blog, so check those out for more knitting pics!

Museum of Russian Art

Yesterday, the husband and I decided to finally check out the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis.  I'm always up for a good museum and our library system participates in the Museum Adventure Pass system so we were able to go for free!  As a side note, if you are local or if your state has an Adventure Pass or similar program, be sure to check it out, it's so great to be able to check out cool places even if you're on a bit of a budget.

Anyway, back to the museum at hand.  The Museum of Russian art is located in a beautiful building in Minneapolis, at one time it was a church and the architecture is Mission style influenced.  This museum is very unique, it's the only museum in North America dedicated to Russian art and artifacts.  The collection of uber fancy Imperial Porcelain and Russian Lacquer works were especially interesting.  Since photography inside the museum isn't allowed, you'll have to check out their website for more pics :)  But here's the husband and I standing outside, me in my Boneyard shawl, him in his Thorpe hat:

Visited any cool museums lately?

Boneyard Shawl - Finished!

Boneyard = done:

I really love this shawl, the colors are fabulous and it's nice and soft!  It was also fun and easy to knit, it was a great tv or podcast project.  I only made a few changes to the pattern:  I did yarn overs instead of M1 increases and I did a picot bind off to add a bit of something extra to the bottom.  The yarn is Sock Candy from Blue Moon Fiber Arts and I used a US size 6 needle - I ended up doing 10 sections for this shawl and I'm really happy with the size.  So overall, my first finished knit of 2011 was a success!  And if you haven't knit a Boneyard yet, do it!

Cardi Cast On

As soon as I finished my Boneyard shawl (I still need to take pics!) I cast on for a cute cardigan.  I'm knitting the Ariosa Wrap Cardi by Cecily Glowik MacDonald and I'm loving it so far.  I'm using some Reynolds Cabana that a friend from knit night destashed - yay for free yarn!  Since this is bulky yarn and I'm using size 10 needles, this project is speeding along nicely:

I just hope the seaming doesn't kill me, I've never sewn in sleeves before, it can't be that bad, right?

Knitscene Winter 2011

A new year, a new issue of Knitscene!  Knitscene might just be my favorite knitting magazine, it almost always has a few "must knits" so I'm always excited when a new preview goes up!  Here are some of my faves from the Winter/Spring issue:

Piccadill Pullover by Debbie O'Neill:

Papeline Pullover by Sarah Fama:

Rayonnant Pullover by Rosemary Hill:

So what do you like from the new issue?

Casting on for 2011

Shockingly, the first thing that I cast on (and didn't rip out later that same day) wasn't socks, but a shawl:

I started this shawl last night, it's a Boneyard by Stephen West and I love it so far!  I'm doing the yarn over variation because I like how it looks and I haaate M1 increases.  The yarn is something I got for Christmas from my mamma, it's Blue Moon Fiber Arts' Sock Candy in the Schaherazade colorway.  I tried my best to get the colors right in the pictures, but I think it's even prettier in person :)

So what's the first project you started in the new year?
